Now Out: Essay 1079 on 獲 (to catch game or fish), 2 Revisions, and 5 New-Monics

The 264th essay has posted! Essay 1079 on 獲 (to catch game or fish; get) is now available for purchase. Here's a preview:

It might seem from the primary definition of 獲 and from its “animal” radical that this kanji is mainly for trapping wild animals, rounding up strays, chasing prey, and catching fish. You can certainly use 獲 in those ways, but this kanji also enables you to talk about acquiring languages, capturing an enemy’s equipment, winning literary prizes, getting ahold of busy people, and much more.

Using the accompanying game on the Character Home Page, you can practice the vocabulary in the essay after reading it.

The game format has changed, and some games don't yet have enough associated vocabulary to work. I'm working to fix the problem.

Two essay revisions have posted:

essay 1081 on 穫 (to harvest, reap)

essay 1784 on 捕 (to catch; grasp; seize; capture; arrest)

Details are at the links. If you've bought these essays before or if you have a subscription, you can download the new versions for free.

Finally, Ulrike has produced the following new-monics (which are free!):

桟 (1308: frame (e.g., of a sliding door))
傘 (1310: umbrella)
暫 (1311: awhile)
漸 (1503: gradual)
斬 (2021: to cut with a sword)
